Letters into words

Type GARDEN into the solver in Words mode and the Word Unscrambler returns every word those letters can build: full-length answers such as DANGER and GARDEN itself, alongside shorter finds like GRADE, RANGE and RAGED, grouped by length.

The engine treats your input as a rack: each letter can be used only as many times as it appears, so one G never becomes two. Filters for starts-with, ends-with, contains and exact length narrow the field when you need something specific.

Anagrams and jumbles

Give the letters RTAEH to Anagram mode and you get the complete rearrangements: EARTH, HEART and HATER each use every letter exactly once. That is the defining difference: an anagram normally consumes the whole rack, while an unscrambler also reports the shorter words hiding inside it.

Jumble mode is the puzzle-solving cousin. It leads with the full-length answers a Jumble puzzle expects and keeps shorter words as secondary helpers, so the likely solution is the first thing you see.

Crossword patterns

When you know some letters of a crossword answer, enter a pattern such as C??SS. The C is fixed in the first square, each question mark stands for exactly one unknown letter, and the double S is fixed at the end, so only five-letter words with that exact shape come back: chess, class, crass, cress and cross.

The pattern’s length is the answer’s length. The Crossword Solver matches letters and positions; it does not interpret the meaning of clues. Judging candidates against the clue stays your part of the puzzle.

Word-game answers

Scrabble, Words With Friends and Wordfeud modes run on the same engine and the same Word Lists: what changes is the workspace that opens and the score context shown beside each word.

Scores follow a standard letter-tile baseline for comparing plays rather than official in-game values, and the modes deliberately stop short of board analysis or move strategy. Their job is a clear answer to “what can I play from these tiles?”

How the word engine works

Every mode on this site is a different doorway into the same engine. Whichever task you choose, a search passes through the same seven stages.

Your input is normalized

The engine works on lowercase letters a–z, so WORDS and words are the same search. Anything outside the accepted characters for the chosen mode is stripped before the query runs: letter modes accept ? as a blank that can stand for any letter, Crossword mode accepts ? or _ for unknown squares, and input is capped at fifteen characters.

The selected mode sets the rules

Words mode looks for words buildable from some or all of your letters. Anagram and Jumble modes concentrate on complete rearrangements that consume every letter. Crossword mode switches from rack logic to positional logic. The word-game modes run the same eligibility search and add their scoring context on top.

Repeated letters are counted, not assumed

A rack like NEEDED holds three Es and two Ds, and no more. Any candidate needing an extra copy of a letter is rejected, no matter how common the word is. A blank (?) is the only way to cover a letter you did not supply.

Patterns preserve positions

In C??SS, position one must be C, positions four and five must be S, and positions two and three may be any letter, but there must be exactly five in total. A word that merely contains those letters somewhere does not qualify; it has to match square by square.

The selected Word List decides eligibility

Building a spelling from your letters is necessary but not sufficient: the word must also belong to the list you selected. That is the whole reason different lists return different totals for the same rack.

Game mode sets the score context

Eligibility and score are separate questions. The same word can carry different values under different tile systems, so the Scrabble, Words With Friends and Wordfeud workspaces each present the scoring context relevant to that game: on this site, a standard letter-tile baseline used for comparison.

Results are organized for the task

The Word Unscrambler groups answers by length, longest first, with score or alphabetical sorting inside each group. The Jumble Solver leads with full-length Jumble Answers and keeps shorter words as helpers. The Crossword Solver lists pattern matches with familiar words first. Wherever a word has enough dictionary data behind it, the result links through to its own page of meanings, scores and related words.

What can I enter in the universal solver?+
Letters a–z in any mode, up to fifteen characters, typed in any case. The letter modes (Words, Anagrams, Jumble and the word-game modes) also accept ? as a blank that can stand for any letter. Crossword mode takes a pattern instead: known letters plus ? (or _) for each unknown square, like C??SS. Spaces, hyphens and other punctuation are not part of any search.
Which Word List should I choose?+
General English is the balanced default for everyday word finding. Extended English casts the widest net, adding rare, historical and technical entries. Choose North American or International when you want eligibility to follow the corresponding regional game-style list. The separate game selector (Scrabble, Words With Friends or Wordfeud) controls the scoring workspace, not the vocabulary.
Why do different games return different words?+
Two separate things are at work: eligibility and scoring. Eligibility comes from the selected Word List, and regional lists genuinely differ in which spellings they accept. Scoring comes from the game context. Third-party games also revise their own dictionaries over time, so a word accepted here under a game-style list may still be treated differently inside a particular app.
What is the difference between an anagram and an unscrambled word?+
An anagram normally uses every supplied letter exactly once: EARTH and HEART are anagrams of the same five letters. An unscrambler is broader: it also returns the shorter words hiding inside the rack. Jumble mode sits between the two, leading with complete rearrangements because that is what a Jumble puzzle asks for.
Can the Crossword Solver understand clues?+
No. The current Crossword Solver matches letter patterns and positional constraints: it finds every eligible word that fits C??SS, but it does not read or interpret the meaning of a clue. The judgement between candidates stays with you.
Why are some words not linked?+
A result links to its own word page only when the entry has enough definition-backed content to support one. The engine can recognize a spelling as eligible for a solver even when that supporting data does not exist yet. Those words appear as plain, unlinked results.
Where do definitions and word scores come from?+
Meanings, senses and pronunciations come from the platform’s lexical data and appear only where that data exists: not every playable word has a full definition. Scores follow the tile-value system of the selected game mode, using a standard letter-tile baseline for comparison.
